Strategies of Quality Assurance and Quality Development at German Universities

Prof. Dr. Franz Bosbach, Prorecor for Study and Teaching at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) held on Monday, 11th May 2009, a lecture on the topic of “Quality in study and teaching – strategies of the University of Duisburg-Essen”.

According to professor Bosbach, in view of the new tasks concerning university management, the UDE has chosen the model of a full-time prorector for teaching. Giving an overview of different tasks of his department, he reported for instance on administrative hurdles in the accreditation process.

Especially interesting was his account of the so-called „drop-out” rate, which at UDE amounts to 60%. Over half of the first-year students either completely drop out of their studies or change the field of study. In view of these issues the UDE started a project of establishing “professoral mentoring” at the whole University in order to improve in this way the study counselling and monitoring. In this context the study process of the students who drop out or change their study field is analysed as well.

On Monday morning the students of the Master’s Study Course were introduced to the chosen concepts of quality management in the tertiary education sector and welcomed the thereafter following practice report. In the discussion with professor Bosbach the students included their own study experiences.
